Palo Alto holds the Stanford medical campus, the Palo Alto Medical Foundation center on El Camino Real and the VA Palo Alto Health Care System on Miranda Avenue. Their weight shows in the suggestions, such as palo alto physical therapy pamf, palo alto dermatology sutter health and va palo alto chiropractor. So when someone types a broad health term, a large system often fills the top of the page.
An independent clinic therefore wins elsewhere: on its specialty, its street and its reviews. For instance, Google suggests palo alto physical therapy & hand therapy and chiropractor palo alto california ave. In narrow searches like these, a focused practice can outrank a giant simply because it is more relevant.
By the time they call, patients here have compared two or three clinics on reviews and credentials. Still, they need practical answers: who will treat them, what a first session involves and how soon they can book. They also want to know whether you bill insurance or provide a superbill.
Search demand
Pulled straight from Google’s US autocomplete on October 5, 2026. Narrow terms like these belong less to the big systems than broad ones do.
Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, while a health system earns prominence almost by default. Relevance, however, is where an independent clinic catches up: a page about hand therapy, a profile categorized as an acupuncture clinic, reviews that mention the problem you solved. Distance you cannot change, but an exact address and clear directions make sure you count for the patients who are close.
Where patients drift away
We check these first on a clinic audit, and most need nothing more than clearer, more precise wording.
A physical therapist listed only as a “medical clinic” competes with every system in town. In contrast, the most specific primary category does more than any amount of copy.
Patients choose a person rather than a building. So short bios with credentials, focus areas and the license each clinician holds give them someone to pick.
Insurance, superbills, referrals, first-visit length: when these are missing, a careful patient calls the clinic that published them.
A dermatology clinic offering both should separate them, because someone booking a skin check and someone researching a cosmetic treatment use very different words.
The work
The most precise primary category, accurate hours and appointment links, as well as photos of your actual treatment rooms.
Pages for needs such as hand therapy, sports injuries, couples counseling or acupuncture for pain, each saying who it helps and how sessions run.
Names, licenses, training and focus areas, written to inform rather than to impress.
Insurance, superbills, referrals, cancellations and what to bring, all on one page so nobody has to call first.
We send a request when a visit ends, and it never invites patients to share medical details.
What search delivered each month in calls and appointment requests, together with what we adjusted.
Done carefully
Each field has its own regulators and pitfalls. Here is how we handle this one.
Every sentence on a clinic’s site should be one your licensing board would be comfortable reading aloud.
Depending on your profession, that board may be the Medical Board of California, the Board of Behavioral Sciences, the Physical Therapy Board of California or another regulator. Because HIPAA governs patient information, review replies never confirm that you treated anyone. Med spa pages also describe physician oversight and each treatment plainly, without promised results.

How we work
Every Palo Alto client goes through the same four steps, whatever they sell.
We review your site, your Business Profile and the competitors ahead of you, sampling rankings from several points around Palo Alto.
We choose the searches worth winning, assign each one a single page and explain the reasoning.
Listing, site and content work, beginning with the fixes most likely to move leads soonest.
Every month: leads, positions, what changed and why, and what we tackle next.
Questions
By choosing different ground, because broad terms favor large systems. Specific ones, in contrast, favor whoever describes the service most clearly, such as hand therapy or chiropractic care near California Avenue.
Many counselors decide not to ask, out of respect for the therapeutic relationship, so check your own professional guidance. Even so, a complete profile, clear bios and helpful pages still carry a practice a long way.
Describe the treatment, who performs it, how physician oversight works and what recovery usually involves. However, avoid promising outcomes, because measured, specific pages reassure cautious researchers.
Sometimes, since Google allows individual practitioner profiles in some cases, but they can compete with the clinic’s own listing. So we look at how patients currently find you and recommend one approach, rather than creating profiles by default.
A clinic pays $300 on Starter, $500 on Growth or $700 on Pro each month, in US dollars. Compare what each tier covers, since nothing ties you in. Pro is where we manage Google Ads, though Google collects the spend. Keeping your site maintained is part of the fee, while rebuilds and speed fixes carry their own price.
